Swimming and swirling in the algal boil, curly leaf pondweed and common carp are joined by more than the shared history of their introduction. In the heat of summer, the decaying pondweed is spun up in plumes from the depths by the fish with which it stowed away a century ago. Together they catalyze a cycle of nutrient loading and algae blooms that have turned our clear blue waters to murky green.
