Early American apiaries devoted large tracts of land otherwise too wet for wildflowers to the cultivation of purple loosestrife for its copious nectar-filled blooms. Like so many things that seem too good to be true, loosestrife was soon abandoned due to the rather poor honey it produced. While the culinary crime could be rectified, the ecological damage was irreversible.
