I am opening up my printmaking studio for a two day collagraph workshop. Collagraphs are an exciting and relatively uncommon print medium where elements such as leaves, sand, gesso, paper, string and fabric are collaged onto a board creating a textural “drawing.” This collage can then be printed onto paper to produce an inked embossing.

In the first class session, we will start the morning with a short walk (or drive, weather-dependent) to the White Bear Lake shoreline to gather dried plant materials for use during the class. Students will then discover how to create collagraph plates using plant materials such as leaves, reeds and various grasses. The second session will focus on printing the collagraph plates where students will have the opportunity to pull their own prints on an etching press.

Basic tools and materials will be provided. We will be printing with oil-based ink. Be sure to bring a smock or wear appropriate clothing as these inks will permanently stain all fabric.

I am opening up my printmaking studio for a one day woodcut workshop where students will learn to carve and print a single layer woodcut. We will explore simplifying an image to suit the media, reverse imagery, safe carving techniques and hand printing.

Basic tools and materials will be provided. We will be printing with black oil-based ink. Be sure to bring a smock or wear appropriate clothing as these inks will permanently stain all fabric. The workshop will break for about one hour between the carving and printing stages, so please bring a bag dinner or enjoy one of the many local restaurant options in Downtown White Bear Lake.
