Collagraphs are an exciting and relatively uncommon form of printmaking where elements such as leaves, sand, gesso, paper and fabric are collaged onto a board creating a textural “drawing.” This collage can then be printed onto paper to produce an inked embossing. Students will be using glues and inks, so they should be sure to bring a smock or wear clothing that can get stained.

In the first session, students will discover how to create collagraph plates using various materials including, but not limited to, cedar boughs, fabrics, string, spices, corrugated cardboard and Mod Podge. The second session will focus on printing the collagraph plates where students will have the opportunity to pull their own prints on Banfill-Locke’s new etching press.

NOTE: This workshop is being held at Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts. The art center's address is 6666 East River Road, Fridley, Minnesota 55432.

This workshop will explore monotype techniques made famous by such artists as William Blake, Edgar Degas and Marc Chagall. I will provide a brief overview of the history of this 400-year-old art form where a one-of-a-kind image is printed from a smooth (scratch-less and nonporous) printing plate. You will learn to create your own monotype prints using direct paint methods in single and multiple layers. Bring lots of ideas and sketches as this process encourages the prolific creation of unique and colorful prints using Banfill-Locke’s new etching press. Students will be using oil-based inks, so they should be sure to bring a smock or wear clothing that can get stained.
